Shanil Hussain Wins Young Professional Award

ULEMCo is delighted to announce that Controls & Calibration Engineer Shanil Hussain has received the Hydrogen Scotland Young Professional Award, recognising his contribution to the development of practical hydrogen technologies for transport.

Since joining ULEMCo, Shanil has worked across a range of hydrogen projects, developing controls and software for hydrogen-powered vehicles and machines. His work has included a key contribution to HyTANKa®, ULEMCo’s autonomous mobile hydrogen refuelling vehicle, as well as hydrogen drivetrain technologies including fuel cell-based range extenders (FCRx®), a hydrogen monofuel engine hybrid system (HyICE) and a hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel system.

Shanil has also contributed to the development of a gas control system for a full-hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICED®) for an OEM.

HyTANKa® has been particularly significant in Shanil’s development, having been the first project he worked on after joining ULEMCo. He contributed to the refuelling system controls and software, including taking responsibility for developing automated internal boosting and the vehicle’s display interface.

His award recognises not only his technical contribution, but also his initiative, problem-solving approach and commitment to developing practical hydrogen solutions.

Shanil said: “I am proud to have played a part in the development of HyTANKa® and the other hydrogen technologies I have worked on at ULEMCo. Receiving this award is a great recognition of the opportunities I have had to develop as an engineer, and it motivates me to continue contributing to the hydrogen sector.”

Amanda Lyne, Managing Director of ULEMCo, said: “Shanil has made a significant contribution to some of our most innovative hydrogen projects since joining ULEMCo. His work on HyTANKa®, in particular, demonstrated his ability to take ownership of challenging engineering problems and develop practical solutions. It is fantastic to see his technical skills, initiative and commitment to the hydrogen sector recognised through this award. We are very proud of what Shanil has achieved and look forward to seeing him continue to develop as an engineer and play an increasingly important role in the future of hydrogen mobility.”

Looking ahead, Shanil aims to build on his experience by taking increasing responsibility for the design, development and validation of hydrogen powertrain systems, helping accelerate hydrogen fuel technologies from demonstration to real-world deployment.
